Remember These Handy Tips While Rejuvenating Ancient Structures…

Antique house structure, ancient antique building structures, ancient stone structures

An antique house is a priceless treasure, you should be lucky enough to reside in one! Since it is an old structure, there are bound to be things that require restoring and those that need replacing. However, do ensure that the “master” is not destroyed, for no copies will be available as replacements! The original exteriors and interiors have to be preserved to the furthest extent possible. Of course, do not turn it into a museum; it is a house for you and your family. You are a part of its history too.

At the same time, do bear in mind that you should not go to the other extreme of overdoing things. The edifice is old and should remain so; giving it a brand new look is going to spoil everything. Who knows, you might feel the need to pass it on to a new owner somewhere in the future; it could be someone from your family or a stranger. The bottom line is that an antique should change hands; there are plenty of modern structures all over the place!

Here are some considerations that will come in handy when you are conducting the necessary repairs—

(1) Let us begin from the outside. Does your property have a fence? If it is now in a dilapidated condition, have a detailed conversation with your contractor about restoring it. Let him get thoroughly acquainted with the design and construction; drawings can be added to the instructions. If the fence cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced with a similar type of fence belonging to those times.

(2) Now for the garden. Get some expert advice on creating a setting that belonged to that particular period. Otherwise, the house and the garden will not complement each other. All these details need to be worked out for your front garden—layout, surfaces utilized on driveways and pathways, and plants.

(3) Do not even look at modern materials like concrete blocks, metal frames for windows, and so on! Your house will prefer its original clothing as far as exteriors and interiors are concerned. Yes, unnoticeable things like kitchen laminates may be used if absolutely necessary. And do not feel that you cannot get traditional materials. They are there; you should just know where to look!

(4) Flamboyant colors will be totally out of place; those color schemes which were in fashion during that specific period are in order for antique houses.

(5) Take note of small details such as hardware, light fittings, decorative glass used, moldings present on doors, and so on.

(6) Your residence is sure to have a planned interior, indicating which room was used for what purpose. Avoid unnecessary and excessive alterations; they will ruin the “feel” of the rooms.

(7) We would like to show off our floors, wouldn’t we? But all those fancy tiles and polyurethane finishes will clash with the “antique look” of your property. Tung-oil and Japan would be better options as finishes. Also, stay away from overuse of floor-sander; maybe the kitchen and rooms that are not too obvious are enough.

(8) Is your residence a cottage or a small property? Then, en-suite bathrooms are not meant to be there.

(9) Timber cottages are to be left as they were. Jacking them up on level blocks is not at all a good idea. You do not want the structure collapsing on you or getting destroyed.

(10) Do you wish to acquire more living space? Rear extensions will make that possible. And in case you dwell on a hilly terrain, excavate the land and construct additional rooms underneath, towards the rear of the house.
