The central heating system in your residence can wreck havoc on your
antique furniture! The relative humidity drops to very low levels because
of the dryness—around 25% to 30%. Your precious pieces are going to wonder
if they are in the Sahara desert! A humidifier allows for circulation
of adequate moisture. The choice of machine will depend on what you need
it for, as well as the size of the room it is to be kept in. Consult a
professional.
This strong, silent humidifier is totally hygienic. Apart from that,
it is user-friendly. It is possible that you forget to fill water once
in a while. Well, there is an automatic switch that functions as a safety
cut-out; it blocks flow of power. Your humidifier is not fussy about the
type of water it requires—it can adjust to hard water too. But do de-scale
it occasionally, just as you would do for a kettle.
Let us now take a look at the type of humidifiers on display—
(1) Non-electric/Hang-on radiator humidifier: Whichever rooms house your
antique furniture, each one requires this large-capacity humidifier inside
the housing of the radiator. The size of the humidifier has to match the
size of the radiator. But do have a hinge in the front, on the housing,
so that you can fill water daily without any trouble. And do not forget
to re-fill! If you wish to, you can add essential oils too.
The best thing about the non-electric humidifier is that you can never
go overboard with the humidity!
(2) Electric humidifiers: There are various kinds, based on the features
they possess and the principles they work on—
(a) This one works on the basis of ULTRASONIC/ATOMISATION. A localized
effect is created with the aid of extremely soft or distilled water. You
should be able to observe a jet of visible cold mist. This mist can leave
deposits of white chalk dust on surrounding surfaces. You have to ensure
that you replace the water softening cartridges from time to time. This
machine loves to hum!
(b) In contrast is the machine that involves STEAM EVAPORATION. Possessing
no mobile parts, it is silent. Whether the water is soft or hard, you
can observe warm steam in a gentle flow. Since there are no filters to
change, cleaning is an easy job. This hygienic or sterile humidifier distributes
moisture evenly.
(c) Cool moisture that remains invisible is produced by the FAN-ASSISTED
EVAPORATION in the humidifier. You can hear the motor clearly. Replacement
of filters should be a regular process, as should cleaning. Improper cleaning
will result in stagnation (no circulation).
(d) a steam-evaporation humidifier is perfectly suitable for sitting
rooms, bedrooms, and nurseries. It can stock enough water (hard or soft)
to last the night. Of course, de-scaling of the deposited minerals is
required at times. This hygienic humidifier can double up as an inhaler
to ease congestion. Tea tree or eucalyptus is added to the water. For
aromatherapy, we use chamomile or lavender.
